History of Haro Park CentreThe history of Haro Park Centre is an amazing story. It is a story that highlights how the vision of a few people made a significant impact on a Vancouver West-End Community and the lives of others. Its beginning take us to the early seventies when the idea of building a long-term care facility for seniors was only a dream. In 1972, the Lions’ Gate B’nai B’rith Building Society purchased the land on which Haro Park Centre is situated. In May 1977 a small group of people decided to seek support for building a long-term care facility in Vancouver. In September 1977, the Netherlands Association for Senior Care contacted the Lions’ Gate B’nai B’rith Building Society to request their participation in a joint venture. As a result of the cooperative relationship, in October of 1978, Haro Park Centre Society was officially registered in Victoria. In May 1980, Haro Park Centre, an $8 million dollar complex was finished and ready for its first residents. Haro Park Centre was officially opened on November 6, 1980 with many dignitaries, member, and friends celebrating the achievement of an historic moment. As stated by Bob McLelland, Minister of Health, “nothing on this scale has ever been provided for in British Columbia.” Today Haro Park Centre with 154 beds is the largest care facility in the West End of Vancouver, BC. The Centre provides care to seniors who meet the BC Ministry of Health criteria for Complex Care. A Special Care Unit provides specialized care for the mentally fragile resident. Palliative care is available when Haro Park Centre can meet the specific needs of the resident. Haro Park Centre also provides subsidized housing (64 bachelor and one bedroom suites) for independent seniors.
